‘Howard Arkley’, Gould Galleries, Melbourne, Feb.-March 2000

‘Howard Arkley’, Gould Galleries, 270 Toorak Road, South Yarra, 12 February – 12 March 2000

The first commercial exhibition of Arkley’s work following his death, this show was mounted by Melbourne gallery director Robert Gould, who had known the artist for some years, and had collected a number of his works. According to a press report, almost all the paintings shown were sold (‘Arkley sells’, Age, 16/2/00).

Among the works exhibited were four of the eight canvases first shown in Arkley’s 1999 exhibition at the Karyn Lovegrove Gallery in Los Angeles; two of the three Ericsson mobile phone paintings Arkley produced in 1996; and an interesting late still life referencing a 1957 painting by John Brack: see Lavender and Sweet William 1998  (reproduced on the exhibition invitation).
