Untitled orange (c.1998?) [W/P]

Synthetic polymer paint on paper, c.75 x 54
Private collection, Melbourne

One of the examples remaining in Arkley’s studio collection at his death, not previously catalogued. The outlined composition is clearly related to Physiognomy 1987.

The exact date of this variant is unclear. Alison Burton says the background pattern was achieved using a metal pizza baking tray as a stencil, bringing to mind an entry in Arkley’s Visual Diary no.38 [old D36] (c.1993-4), p.19, referring to a proposed work in similar format, with the inscription “dots pizza all over”. However, Burton also suggests that the type of paper used here may indicate a later 1990s date.
