Portrait of David  Bromley 1997 [W/P]

Synthetic polymer paint on paper, 29.5 x 21

Signed and dated [l.l./centre: ‘Howard Arkley 1997’]

Coll.: unknown

This work on paper was evidently produced for the sitter, a prominent Melbourne artist, and was first published in the catalogue of the auction of his collection in November 2011.

The distinctive combination of silver and black fibre-tipped pen, with black air-brushing, is closely comparable with a number of the drawings included in no. 31 in the sequence of Arkley’s Sketchbooks (dating from 1996-8); for a reproduction of a typical example from S27, see Carnival Fig.4.14.

Provenance

  • Coll. David Bromley, Melbourne (see next entry)
  • Auctioned by Leonard Joel, Melbourne, 28 Nov.2011 (‘The David Bromley Collection, Part II’), lot 28 (ill. and details as above; est.$1-2,000; sold for $1,400 plus buyer’s premium)
