Grace with Space 1994

Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 160 x 120
signed and dated
[on reverse: ‘Howard Arkley 94’: acc.to ‘Furnish’ 1998]
Coll.: unknown

First shown in the Arkley exhibition at the Bellas Gallery, Brisbane, May 1994, this is an elegant example of Arkley’s sophisticated mid 1990s use of stencilling, here deploying an overall lace pattern on which the linear details are sprayed.

The composition is similar to that of Nice & Spacey (1993), also based on the same lounge-room template in Gold’s Instant Decorator.
