Brand New (1994)

Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 203 x 153
Private collection, Melbourne

First exhibited in Arkley’s ‘Pointillist Suburb’ show (Tolarno, Nov.1994), this work typifies the barrage of pattern and optical effects deployed in this brilliant series of images. In the process, the ordinary suburban subjects involved are radically transformed (for detailed discussion along these lines, see Carnival in Suburbia, 73-77).

This painting is unlikely to be identical with a work listed in Arkley’s 1993-6 stock-book as ‘Brand New Villa’, and described as on canvas, and with the Bellas Gallery, Brisbane, May 1994, since Arkley’s May-June 1994 exhibition with Bellas comprised black and white paintings and works on paper. The stock-book reference makes more sense in relation to Home Enclosed by Fence 1995 [W/P], a monochrome work-on-paper variant of the present composition.
