Chair (1991) [3/M]

Synthetic polymer paint on wood, 86.5 x 38.0 x 40.0, on tiled base, 1.0 x 64.5 x 61.5
Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide [20157S28(a&b)]
This chair is obviously from the set exhibited in the Arkley survey exhibition held at the Monash University Gallery in 1991: see now Four ChairsĀ (1981-91) [3/M], including a photo taken at the exhibition for the Monash Visual Arts slide library, showing it in the centre of a group of three.
In August 2015, the work reappeared in a Deutscher and Hackett auction, with the details and photograph shown here, including provenance information. Correspondence in November 2025 confirmed that it is now in the AGSA collection (with thanks to Rebecca Evans, Curator of Decorative Arts & Design).
Like the other chairs in the group documented in 1991, this includes a triangular leg supporting the seat, and sprayed crosses over a painted background, in this case green over orange. It is unclear whether the tiled base now beneath the chair is original.
