Western Suburbs “Great Potential” 1989

Synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 175 x 135
signed, dated and titled [on reverse]
Private collection, Melbourne
This canvas, not previously listed in the present catalogue, was added in October 2025, following receipt of a copy of a sales receipt dated 22 August 1989 (as noted below), together with ID photos of the work and the inscription on the back.
The work is based on a composition not used for other suburban canvases by Arkley, although the prominent column resembles the one included in Stucco House 1988. The busy zig-zag ornamentation under the roof gables prefigures the more intense patterning included in many of the artist’s suburban paintings during the 1990s.

- Melbourne Contemporary Art Gallery, Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
- Acquired from the above by the present owner, August 1989 (copy of receipt for $6,000 forwarded by Jon Dwyer, Dwyer Fine Art, South Yarra, Sept.2025)
