Spirits crying 1973 [W/P]

Synthetic polymer paint on paper, 50.5 x 63.2

Signed dated and titled [verso]

Private collection, Melbourne

A highly finished work on paper, this drawing shows various shapes floating against a dark background, under a sign reading ‘[word indistinct] CLINIC’; at the top is a cancelled phrase reading ‘Night… / makes me wonder’.

This work is on the same scale as Untitled [A279] c.1973 [W/P] and Untitled [A280] c.1973 [W/P]. All three drawings were possibly produced at the same time, and one of more of them may have been among the 6 drawings Arkley showed at Hawthorn in 1973 (see exhibition details below).
